Workshop schedule

Day 1
The workshop begins after dinner with a warm welcome, information on retreat accommodations, and an overview of the retreat experience, including studio safety.

Day 2
Participants will sand their prepared panel. Throughout the week they will learn panel preparation, beginning with application of hide glue and thin cloth, and then several layers of gesso. Geometric analysis will be introduced.

Day 3
Participants continue analysis and, using the information they have learned, draw their image to their panel size.

Day 4
Exercises to sharpen drawing skills are begun. Icon drawings are refined and then transferred to mat board and then to the panel. Mixing of egg emulsion is followed by brush practice, and then drawings on mat board and on the panel are lined. Gold leaf is applied to panel.

Day 5
The color for skin and hair, called sankir, is applied and allowed to dry. While awaiting drying of the panel, students do exercises in color theory and mixing. Students apply base colors of garments, etc, if any. Highlighting is begun.

Days 6-8
Highlighting is continued.

Day 9
Finishing touches are applied, including inscriptions, backgrounds, and borders.

Day 10

During the retreat, participants will receive handouts that include: articles, recipes and technical information, exercises, steps in highlighting, and reflection material. Formal and informal presentations and discussions occur during the week. Those students who bring a completed, fully dried icon may have their icon varnished with the application of olifa during the Retreat. Prior to the retreat Please contact the Retreat personnel so that proper arrangements may be made. More advanced students may work on more complex images.
